2022/23 winners of Step into the NHS secondary schools competition

We’d like to thank all the schools and students who submitted entries to the 2022/23 Step into the NHS secondary schools competition. We really enjoyed looking through them all!

The competition saw an impressive 973 entries from 1,465 students in over 120 schools from all over England. We estimate that over 17,000 students took part in the competition or worked on the educational resources, which asked students in years 7-9 to research an NHS role and create a lively and engaging job advert that would appeal to their peers. The winners are listed below, and you can see their entries on our online gallery on the Step into the NHS website.

National winner

We held a Winners' Day on 16 June where our ten regional winners presented their entries virtually to our NHS judges: director of nursing Kath Evans, medical student Takanayi Mureyi, radiographer Naman Julka-Anderson and physiotherapist Justine Musiime.

They chose Tanvir, 14, from Derby Moor Spencer Academy in Derby, East Midlands, as our national winner! 

Tanvir, who is in year 9, designed a detailed poster that showed the responsibilities and skills needed to be an accident and emergency doctor. Creatively presented via a narrated video, the poster was thorough and well-researched, while being full of colour and appeal to her peers. It even included a model of a hospital ward to show what the job may look like in action.

Tanvir's entry stood out to our judges, meaning that she scoops this year's top prize of a £50 Amazon voucher, goody bag, framed 'national winner' certificate and a class prize. Her entry will also be displayed in public for her local community to see. Well done Tanvir!

The judges said: "A really well thought out project and so much dedication. We absolutely loved your entry and your passion for the NHS really shone through. The model was brilliant and the way you presented with props was fantastic. Well done on being the national winner!"

Regional winners

We received some fantastic entries from all over England, and chose the best from each region. Each regional winner receives a 'regional winner' certificate, a £25 Amazon voucher and an exciting goody bag. Highly commended and 'best in school' certificates have also been awarded.

East of England

Year 7 students Sonika and Jasleen from Hitchin Girls' School in Hertfordshire, creatively used a news magazine programme format for their pharmacist video. It presented the job's responsibilities, skills and qualifications in a way that was engaging to their peers. Judges said: "We loved your original approach to advertising the role of a pharmacist. It was a very entertaining video, with lots of really useful and relevant information!"

Kent, Surrey and Sussex

Year 7 students Huayi, Natalia and Arabella from Tormead School in Guildford, Surrey, created a website for the role of porter. With engaging videos and a Q&A, the content was well-researched and presented. Judges said: "We really enjoyed visiting your website to advertise the role of porter - an often forgotten about career! We also loved the videos added, showing you'd really grasped what the role was about - well done!"

London

Year 8 students Kate, Sophia and Isabel from Surbiton High School in South West London created a lively and upbeat animated video to advertise the role of haematology. Judges said: "We loved your fantastic animation on being a haematologist - you used humour and creativity to explain a complicated role in a very entertaining and understandable way. A career in marketing awaits!"

North East

Year 8 students Ananya, Anindita, Khloe and Chloé from Durham High School for Girls created a cartoon strip to advertise the role of paediatrician, telling the story of a doctor getting her first job. Judges said: "We loved your very creative cartoon strip. It was very easy to follow and showed an excellent understanding of the career of a paediatrician. Well done!"

North West

Year 8 student Ellen from Keswick School in the Lake District created a board game to advertise the role of children's nurse, accompanied by an information sheet to explain the role. Judges said: "What a colourful and detailed board game to advertise the role of a children's nurse. Well done!"

South West

Year 8 student Emma from Ivybridge Community College in Devon created a creative and succinct poster for the role of paramedic, which included key facts, responsibilities and advantages. Judges said: "We loved your beautifully produced poster advertising the role of a paramedic. You provided lots of facts. Well done!"

Thames Valley and Wessex

Year 8 students David, Rijuta and Kristle from Herschel Grammar School in Slough, Berkshire created a video in the style of a news magazine programme for the role of cardiovascular operating room nurse. With information, interviews, and even a song, judges said: "A very creative way of advertising the role, that was heart-warming and positive. We especially loved your inclusion of core beliefs and values needed in the NHS. Well done!"

West Midlands 

Year 8 student Madeleine from Rugby High School in Warwickshire created a poster for the role of air ambulance doctor, with detailed written information. Judges said: "A very imaginative 3D poster of an air ambulance doctor. You showed a detailed understanding of the role. Well done!"

Yorkshire and the Humber

Year 9 students Grace, Emily and Bella from Dinnington High School in Sheffield created a poster for the role of nurse. Judges said: "A lovely poster that showed a great understanding of how to become a nurse and what the role involves. Well done!"
