Working abroad - developed countries

This page will give you advice on what you need to consider and how to prepare for working abroad in a developed country.

What opportunities are there?

Opportunities (and clinical roles and responsibilities) will vary according to the healthcare system in each country. You should be aware that medical training in the UK may not be equivalent to training in other countries and gaining registration in the country in which you want to work will be an essential first step to practising as a doctor.

  • Overseas roles are competitive, especially as more UK trainees are considering work abroad. You will need to clearly demonstrate your clinical and leadership skills. Having some published research under your belt will also be useful.

  • Before considering working in another country:

    • research how easy it is to gain registration, obtain visas and find work when you get there
    • find out how this period abroad will affect your career progression on return to the UK
    • develop contacts in the country before going out
    • talk to colleagues who have worked abroad for insider tipsĀ
