  • There are 350 careers in the NHS, including clinical roles like nurses and diagnostic radiographers, and non-clinical roles like 111 call handlers or project managers.

If you want to work at the very heart of healthcare, a clinical role could be for you. You’ll be at the forefront of everything we do, actively caring for patients and making a real difference to their physical and mental wellbeing. You’ve probably heard of some of our more well-known careers, like nursing, but there are plenty of other career paths you could choose, including being an allied health professional or healthcare support worker.

Not all of our roles are about actively providing patient care – we have plenty of non-clinical roles available too. These roles are vital to ensuring the NHS is run efficiently and smoothly. Some of these roles include admin, accountants, IT specialists, 111 call handlers, project managers and more.

  • It depends on the role you’d like to apply for.

To become a nurse or allied health professional, you’ll need to complete a degree or apprenticeship first. There are a number of roles that you won’t need any qualifications to apply for, including those in healthcare support work. These roles are more about your personality and people skills, although any healthcare experience is a bonus.

For healthcare support worker and non-clinical roles, you can apply directly through NHS Jobs.

  • Not only are health careers some of the most emotionally rewarding, they’re also full of great benefits too, including:

    • A competitive salary.
    • 27 days holiday a year plus public holidays, plus the opportunity for flexible working.
    • Exclusive health service discounts at some of the biggest brands.
