Around 25,000 vacancies are advertised every month on the NHS Jobs website in more than 350 different careers. Whether you want to work directly with patients or behind the scenes, there'll be a job to suit you.
What every job in the NHS has in common is the knowledge that you're making a difference to people's lives every day.
If your heart is set on a career in the NHS, there are a few things you can do before applying:
- Find out what training is needed. Some employers offer training programmes or apprenticeships
- What opportunities are there to progress your career? The NHS is committed to the development of its staff.
- Find out if you can gain qualifications while working, part-time study or distance learning

NHS Jobs is the online recruitment website. Most NHS organisations advertise their jobs and apprenticeships there. It allows you to search by keyword, location, job group etc.
You can also register to receive job alerts by email so you are the first to know of any vacancies suitable for you.
When you’ve found a suitable vacancy:
- read the information about the job very carefully
- read the questions on the application form
- make sure that you match what they are looking for in the person specification for the job
- take your time to complete the form
- make sure that you emphasise what makes you suitable for the work
- mention any experience you have that will show your commitment and understanding of the work
- check your details and ask someone else to read it through
If you are invited for an interview:
- find out as much as you can about the employer, the role and the people who’ll be interviewing you if you’re given their names in advance
- take time to prepare, eg check out in advance where the interview will be held, decide what you are going to wear and what you will take with you
- think about the type of questions you may be asked and prepare some ideas to answer them
- listen to the questions carefully and take your time when answering
- take the opportunity to ask questions at the end
Be aware that as part of the recruitment process, you may be asked to take aptitude tests. You are likely to have a health assessment and criminal record check through the Disclosure and Barring Service.

Getting a permanent job is not the only way to work in the NHS. You can gain valuable experience by taking a temporary contract or considering temporary ‘bank’ work.
